New Delhi: An initial internal inquiry into the controversy surrounding Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and his alleged links to the so-called Epstein Files has found no evidence of wrongdoing or criminal involvement, according to government sources as cited in media reports. The probe is, however, still ongoing.
The review was launched following media reports suggesting that the recently released Epstein Files — documents linked to the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein held by the US Department of Justice — contain mentions of Puri’s name in connection with email exchanges and meetings. Some opposition figures had interpreted these references as potentially implicating the minister.
According to sources, officials conducted the inquiry internally and recorded Puri’s detailed account. The preliminary findings reportedly concluded that there was no objectionable or criminal involvement by the minister in relation to the matter.
The controversy gained traction after opposition parties, notably the Congress, criticised Puri. They alleged that between 2014 and 2017 he exchanged numerous emails with Epstein and had multiple meetings, and demanded clarity on the nature of those interactions, calling for moral accountability and even resignation.
Puri has consistently denied any improper conduct, describing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. Government sources have reiterated that the review has not found grounds for action against him, and there is currently no threat of his removal from the Union Cabinet.
