Bhubaneswar: The state government has asked the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) to initiate the selection process for direct recruitment of university teachers at the earliest.
In a letter to the OPSC chairman on Monday, commissioner-cum-secretary of Higher Education, Saswat Mishra has said that the state public universities come under the purview of the Odisha Universities Act, 1989.
However, the Act has been recently amended through the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020.
Before the said amendment, selection of teachers for direct recruitment in these Universities, at all levels (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor), was done by a committee of the University headed by the vice-chancellor following UGC regulations and guidelines.
Mishra said as the responsibility of selection of teachers at all levels for direct recruitment in these universities has been assigned to the OPSC after the said amendment. It should initiate the selection process at the earliest after receiving requisitions from the Registrars of the universities, he said.
He also asked the Commission to have a preliminary meeting with Higher Education Department and the universities in this regard if required.
