Mumbai: Nearly midway through its 18th season, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has started throwing up some great contests. The second-highest successful chase was achieved, the lowest total defended in the last few days.
Amidst the high-voltage, hectic action, a dubious ‘businessman’ has been identified as a possible mischief-maker in this cash-rich T20 league, trying to lure players, commentators and others involved into corrupt activities.
Hence, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has put all stakeholders of the IPL — owners, players, coaches, support staff, and commentators — on alert by cautioning them about a Hyderabad-based individual, Cricbuzz reported.
The Anti-Corruption Security Unit (ACSU), ICC’s watchdog, has reportedly found out about a businessman – with links to punters and bookies, and history of being involved in corrupt activities – who is leaving no stone unturned to trap IPL participants. All IPL teams have been advised to watch out and be wary of the individual and immediately report any interaction or share contact number of the businessman if he gets in touch with any offer.
According to ACSU, the suspect’s modus operandi is to pose as fans and target unsuspecting individuals with expensive gifts.
As per Cricbuzz, the individual in question is trying to get close to IPL participants by masquerading as a fan, and has allegedly been spotted at team hotels and at the match venues. There is information of him offering gifts to team members as well as their families.
