Tehran: Iran’s military leadership on Sunday threatened strikes on US and allied infrastructure in response to President Donald Trump’s vow to destroy Iranian power plants unless the Strait of Hormuz reopens immediately.
The Iranian army’s Khatam al-Anbiya operational command issued the warning via a statement carried by Fars News Agency. “Following previous warnings, if Iran’s fuel and energy infrastructure is violated by the enemy, all energy, information technology and desalination infrastructure belonging to the US and the regime in the region will be targeted,” the statement read.
The declaration followed Trump’s social media post on Saturday, where he set a 48-hour deadline for Tehran to restore shipping through the strait — a narrow Gulf waterway closed amid the ongoing West Asia war.
“If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!” Trump wrote.
Iranian threats have blocked most vessels from navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint channeling about 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, heightening risks of a severe worldwide energy crisis.
Last week, energy prices surged after Iran struck back at an Israeli assault on its major South Pars gas field by attacking Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City — a facility processing about one-fifth of the world’s liquefied natural gas—with damage expected to require years of repairs.
