Rourkela: Petrol pumps in Odisha’s Rourkela city reportedly adopted a system of strict rationing amid severe fuel shortage. The rationing measures were introduced even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi advised the countrymen to reduce the use of petrol and diesel.
Apart from seeking prudent use of petrol and diesel, the Prime Miniter also advised restricted foreign travel and purchase of gold.
Sources said petrol pumps in the Sector 17 area of Rourkela were seen following strict rationing system as an emergency measure due to inadequate fuel supply over the last five days. Because of severe shortage, fuel outlets, particularly at the 7/17 chowk, were forced to restrict distribution of petrol and diesel to manage limited stock and keep outlets operational.
Two-wheelers are being supplied petrol for only Rs 200, while four-wheelers are being allowed to fill Rs 2,000 worth of fuel. A ‘No Stock’ board has also been displayed at dispensing units.
Employees of the fuel outlet said that the decision to introduce rationing system was taken after fuel supplies became grossly inadequate. Available stock would be exhausted and the petrol pump would be shut within a day if no restriction is imposed, they said. Rationing has helped keep the pumps operational for at least two days at a time.
They further stated that similar restrictions have been adopted by other fuel outlets in the area amid the ongoing shortage.
The sudden restrictions have caused inconvenience for daily commuters. Several residents said the limited fuel allocation is insufficient for regular travel, especially for long-distance or late-night journeys.
