Bhadrak: The ITI student, who was admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack in a critical condition after allegedly consuming poison due to ragging on Friday, succumbed on Sunday.
The student, identified as Ashutosh Mallik of Nandapur in Bahdrak district, was a first-year student of a private Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Tihidi.

Though the cause behind the student’s alleged suicide attempt has not been ascertained nor a police complaint filed, his family claimed that he took the extreme step due to ragging by the seniors in the institute.
“My brother was a first year student and his seniors abused him verbally in the college. He did not share anything with us and took the extreme step. We found him unconscious and rushed him to DHH for immediate treatment. We demand justice for my brother else several other students will continue to be a victim of ragging,” Ashutosh’s brother told mediapersons.
On being informed, the local police arrived at the spot and initiated a probe into the matter. A purported suicide note was also recovered from his house.
