It’s Official: Bumrah To Be India’s 36th Test Captain; Check Full List Of Skippers

Birmingham: It’s official — Jasprit Bumrah will, indeed, be leading India in the one-off Test against England on their 2022 tour.

The fast-bowling spearhead will become India’s 36th Test captain when he goes out for the toss against English skipper Ben Stokes at Edgbaston on July 1.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who led India in the recent T20 International series against South Africa at home, will be Bumrah’s deputy, BCCI tweeted.

Bumrah was very much in contention for the top job since the day Rohit Sharma tested COVID-19 positive five days ahead of the rescheduled fifth and final match of last year’s series which was cancelled due to coronavirus concerns in the Indian camp.

Rohit, racing against time to be eligible for the Birmingham Test, was keen to play. However, he tested positive again. Coach Rahul Dravid said on Wednesday that the team management was monitoring Rohit’s condition and hinted that he could play in case he tested negative.

On the eve of the Test, though, the team had to take a call, and Rohit was ruled out.
