Jahangirpuri Clashes: Man Who Opened Fire Arrested As Tension Simmers

New Delhi: A man who was seen opening fire during a clash between two communities in the capital’s Jahangirpuri area during the weekend was arrested by Delhi Police on Monday.

The man was identified as 28-year-old Sonu alias Imam alias Yunus, a resident of C-Block in Jahangirpuri.

“A video was being circulated on social media platforms on Sunday, showing a man in a blue shirt opening fire during the riots in Jahangirpuri. He has been nabbed by the special staff of northwest district,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Usha Rangnani said.

Another person, identified as 36-year-old Sheikh Hameed, was arrested for allegedly supplying bottles which were used for pelting during the clash, reported PTI.

Meanwhile, a fresh round of stone-pelting was reported from Jahangirpuri on Monday afternoon.

Stones and bricks were thrown from a roof, close to the site of Saturday’s clash, prompting police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) to cordon off the area.

Several people, including about a dozen police personnel, were injured in violent clashes on Saturday during a Hanuman Jayanti procession.

According to Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana, 23 people from both communities have been arrested so far.
