New Delhi: A month after getting elected as Lok Sabha members of Parliament (MPs), the jailed duo of Amritpal Singh and Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, took oath on Friday.
Radical Sikh preacher Amritpal and Kashmiri leader Rashid won in the Lok Sabha election as Independent candidates from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib and Baramulla in Jammu & Kashmir, respectively, despite being confined in prison.
The 31-year-old Amritpal, lodged in Dibrugarh jail, and Rashid (56), in Tihar jail, were both granted parole so that they can take oath as MPs.
They were brought to Parliament complex by security personnel. There was a heavy deployment of security personnel in and around Parliament complex.
Sworn in by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in his chamber, the duo completed all formalities before being taken out, reported PTI.
Amritpal has been granted four-day parole, taking into account his travel from Assam to Delhi and back, while Rashid was allowed a two-hour custody parole excluding travel time from Tihar jail to the Parliament.
As per parole conditions, neither of them can make any media statements, either directly or through family members.
