New Delhi: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were on Monday sent to judicial custody for two more days after they were produced before a newly-appointed Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) at Mandir Marg police station, an official said.
Das and Ranka were detained for allegedly breaching security and entering Jantar Mantar on October 13. They were then remanded to five days in judicial custody.
Delhi Police had sought further custody of the duo, claiming their release could disrupt “peace and tranquility.”
The CJP legal team wanted their release after filing bail sureties on record. Das and Ranka were earlier sent to judicial custody because their sureties were unavailable on the day of their detention.
“What we have seen in the SEM court is nothing less than a circus,” said the Legal Affairs head of CJP.
As their custody entered the sixth day on Sunday, Abhijeet Dipke alleged, “The state is deliberately prolonging Ashu and Saurav’s illegal arrest by using every dirty trick in the book to delay court proceedings and prevent their release.”
“They have no legal grounds to keep them behind bars, so they are resorting to delaying tactics to keep them there,” he added.
Das and Ranka will now be produced before the magistrate on Wednesday, according to sources.
