Junior Doctor Found Dead In Kolkata Hosp Was Raped, Cites Autopsy Report

Kolkata: A preliminary postmortem of the postgraduate trainee doctor, whose semi-naked body with injury marks was found on the premises of state-government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted before being murdered.

One person was arrested in this regard on Saturday morning.

The arrested person, identified as Sanjay Roy, had free access to several departments in the hospital, police claimed according to reports. He was arrested after police detected him in the CCTV footage and found his movements to be suspicious.

Earlier in the day, nurses in Kolkata conducted a rally, demanding justice for the victim.

Kolkata Police had registered a murder case. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the death of the 31-year-old amid an outcry in Bengal. Medical students and the opposition BJP members and supporters had taken to the streets on Friday to demand justice for the deceased.

Opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari, had also demanded a CBI investigation into the matter. According to the reports, the student was found unconscious in the seminar hall around 11.30 am and was later declared dead.

‘Marks on cheeks, around nose, lips…my daughter was raped’

“Her body was found in the seminar hall of the Emergency building by fellow students, who then informed us. We are talking to doctors, nurses, and others who were on duty with her last night,” a senior police officer told PTI.
The body bore scratch marks on the cheeks, around her nose, lips, in between eyebrows, and on the neck, according to a report on the Hindustan Times. The father of the deceased student, according to media reports, alleged that his daughter was sexually assaulted.
“I am quite sure that my daughter was raped before she was murdered. The injury marks on her body are evident. She was found semi-naked. Efforts are on to hide the truth,” he told Hindustan Times.

CM Mamata Banerjee dials victim’s father

The incident triggered massive protests on the campus of the medical college. Senior police officers and the health secretary of Bengal had rushed to the site to pacify the protesters. Meanwhile, CM Mamata Banerjee on Friday called the victim’s father and assured of free and fair probe into the matter.
