Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay Resigns, To Join BJP On Thursday

Kolkata: Hours after resigning, former Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Tuesday announced that he would join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on March 7.

He announced joining the saffron party at a press meet organised at his Salk Lake residence hours after sending his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court T S Sivagnanam early in the day.

“I will join BJP most probably on March 7. It is the only national party which is fighting against Trinamool Congress’s (TMC’s) corruption,” he told media.

He, however, said the party will decide if he will contest in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Justice Gangopadhyay had on Sunday announced that he was quitting the judiciary and had hinted that he may enter politics.

“I have been forced to take this step due to taunts by the ruling party. Their taunts and statements inspired me to take this step. The ruling party insulted me many times. Their spokespersons attacked me with unparliamentary words. I think they have a problem with their education,” he said.

Monday was his last working day.
