New Delhi: Justice BV Nagarathna is set to be the first woman to become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in 2027.

The Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice NV Ramana, has made a recommendation of the names of nine judges for the elevation to the apex court.

The recommendations had Justice BV Nagarathna’s name who is currently a judge in the Karnataka High Court. The other two women judges in the recommended list are Justice Hima Kohi and Justice Bela Trivedi.

It may be recalled that ahead of his retirement, former Chief Justice SA Bobde had said that “the time has come for India to have a woman Chief Justice”.

“We have the interest of women in our minds, and we are implementing it best. There is no attitude change in us. The only thing is we have to get good candidates,” Bobde had said.
