Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday congratulated Jyotirmayee Mohanty, an Odia scientist at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, for becoming the first woman from Indian to be felicitated with International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Award 2023.

She has been awarded in the ‘Distinguished Women in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering’ category.

Taking to his personal Twitter handle, Naveen wrote, “I congratulate the Odia scientist Jyotirmayee Mohanty, who has been selected for the prestigious IUPAC Award 2023 @IUPAC as the country’s first woman. Her achievement in the field of chemistry is a matter of pride and glory for all. I wish her to scale greater heights of success in the coming days.”

Daughter of renowned paediatrician Dr Baikuntnath Patra of Chauliaganj in Cuttack, she is married to Rasmiranjan Mohanty, also a scientist and native of Titira village under Balikuda block in Jagatsinghpur.

Jyotirmayee is the also first woman to receive fellowship in Science and Engineering Research Board. Last year, she was awarded fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in the United Kingdom.

Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science, IUPAC had on February 11 announced the names of 12 awardees. The awards ceremony was initiated as part of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry celebrations and is held every year to acknowledge and promote the works of women chemists and chemical engineers worldwide.
