Kabul: Two Afghanistan journalists reporting on women’s protests in Kabul were allegedly detained and severely beaten by Taliban security forces.

Kabul-based media outlet Etilaat-e Roz’s Taqi Daryabi and Nemat Naqdi were allegedly detained and assaulted on Tuesday. The reporters were covering protests by women in Kabul who were demanding an end to Taliban violations of women and girls’ rights.

According to Etilaat-e Roz, Taliban authorities took the two mediapersons to a Kabul police station, locked them up in separate cells and beat them severely with cables.

Both men were released on Wednesday and taken to a hospital where they were treated for injuries to their backs and faces.

“Two of my colleagues were detained by Taliban, beaten for four hours… Under constant and brutal torture of the Taliban, the reporters lost their consciousness four times,” said editor-in-chief of Etilaat-e Roz Zaki Daryabi, as reported by Sky News.

Human Rights Watch reported that the Taliban detained Tolo News photojournalist Wahid Ahmadi on September 7, and released him the same day. His camera was reportedly confiscated while other journalists were prevented from filming the protest.

Women have been marching through the Afghan capital demanding that their freedom be guaranteed under the new Islamist regime.
