Kanpur: A 48-year-old man, living at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly slit the throats of his two 11-year-old daughters early on Sunday and then called the police and turned himself in.
The motive behind the crime is yet to be ascertained, but his wife claimed that Shashi Ranjan Mishra was suffering from depression.
Mishra, originally from Bihar, worked as a medical representative. He lived in Kanpur with his wife, Reshma, their twin daughters — Riddhi and Siddhi — and six-year-old son.
He suspected his wife had an affair and often used to tell her that she should live with their son, and he would take care of their daughters, the police alleged.
Mishra suffered from depression and had put multiple CCTV cameras inside their home, Reshma alleged. He would also not let her enter their daughters’ rooms, she claimed.
Everything seemed normal till Saturday evening when the family had dinner together. Mishra then took the girls to bed. According to Reshma, CCTV footage revealed that he took one of the girls to the washroom around 2.30 am, following which they returned to the room, and the lights were switched off, as reported by NDTV.
Mishra called the police two hours later at their emergency response service number and reported that he had murdered the twins.
The police found both girls lying in a pool of blood on reaching the flat. Their throats were slit. Mishra was present inside the room.
Reshma, originally from West Bengal, met Mishra while working at a beauty parlour in Kanpur. They got married in 2014.
“The father has been arrested, and the case is being thoroughly investigated,” deputy commissioner of police Deependra Nath Chaudhary told reporters.
The bodies have been sent for postmortem, he said. More would be known about the crime after the report is received.
