Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: Veteran leaders should step down from active politics and guide the young leaders of the party. Due to this practice followed by the BJP, BS Yediyurappa resigned as Karnataka chief minister, giving way for Basavaraj Bommai to assume the post, said national vice-president of the party Baijayant Panda.

Commenting on the latest developments in Karnataka, Baijayant said the BJP, which has emerged as the largest party in the world, has been not only respecting the democratic principles but also following those in spirit unlike some parties which are still engaged in family rule.

The practice of letting the inexperienced young leaders belonging to a particular family to head the party is undemocratic, he said.

Reacting to the criticism raised in certain quarters that Bommai was following family politics, Baijayant said it is a fact that the former’s father was a chief minister of the state.

But it cannot be ignored that the present chief minister has been involved in active politics for several decades and has created an identity for himself in the BJP due to his hard work and service to the people, he added.
