Bengaluru: Senior Karnataka Congress leader made sexist and outrageous remark in the Karnataka Assembly with speaker laughing during a discussion regarding the farmers’ issue.
“There is a saying that when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That is exactly the position which you are in,” former Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly KR Ramesh said on Thursday. It drew guffaws from other members including his successor Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri.
The Congress leader made the statement when the MLAs sought Speaker’s time to discuss farmers’ issues in the Assembly.
The Speaker said the session cannot be held if time was allotted to everyone. “Whatever you decide — I will say yes. What I am thinking is that let us enjoy the situation. I can’t control or regulate the system. My concern is about the business of the house, it has also to be covered,” Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri then added in a note of resignation.
Ramesh Kumar drew the offensive parallel to this as the members broke into laughter.
The state has a high crime rate against women. The Karnataka State Police data revealed 1,168 rape cases across the state from January 2019 to May 2021. The data were reported during the rape at Mysuru’s Chamundi hills in August.
