New Delhi: India thwarted an attempt by the Pakistan military to target several military sites across northern and western India on the night of May 7-8, the Ministry of Defence said on Thursday.
Drones and missiles were used for targeting Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj. “These were neutralised by the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The debris of these attacks is now being recovered from a number of locations that prove the Pakistani attacks,” it added.

The Indian Air Force used the Russian-made S-400 missile defence system, one of the deadliest surface-to-air missiles, to negate last night’s escalation bid.
In October 2018, India signed a $5 billion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems, despite a warning from the then Donal Trump administration that going ahead with the contract may invite US sanctions. The S-400 is considered a major threat by NATO members as it can destroy aircraft, cruise missiles and even fast-moving intermediate range ballistic missiles at around 400 km strike range.
Russia started delivery of the first regiment of the missile in December 2021 and accordingly these were deployed strategically to destroy any threats from China in the northern sector as well as the frontier with Pakistan.

The Ministry also informed that Indian Armed Forces targeted Air Defence Radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan. “Indian response has been in the same domain with the same intensity as Pakistan. It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised,” it added.
