Kathmandu: Nepal remains smoldering in the wake of violent Gen Z-led protests, which forced the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and have now escalated into sweeping demands for political transformation and accountability. Day 2 of the Gen-Z protests saw the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, hours after he appealed for calm and called an all-party meet. President Ram Chandra Poudel accepted his resignation amid political unrest over “corruption”.

Young protesters—primarily from Generation Z—have released a bold, coordinated manifesto calling for sweeping reform. Their demands include:

Immediate dissolution of the House of Representatives, accused of losing public trust.

Amendment or complete rewriting of the Constitution, involving citizens, youth, and experts.

New, fair elections following an interim period, with direct public participation.

Creation of a directly elected executive leadership.

A full investigation into assets looted over the past three decades, with a demand to nationalise illegally acquired properties.

Structural reform of key institutions—education, health, justice, security, and communications.

Official recognition of those who perished in the protests as martyrs, along with state honours and support for their families.

Launching programmes to tackle unemployment, reduce migration, and address social injustice.

Protesters emphasized that “This movement is not for any party or individual but for the entire generation and the nation’s future”, noting that “Peace is essential, but it is possible only on the foundation of a new political system.” They voiced hope that both the President and the Nepal Army would endorse and implement their proposal.

Despite the collapse of Oli’s government, unrest continues, notably with protesters storming and setting fire to the Parliament building. The Nepal Army has taken control of security operations across Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, and other areas, imposing curfews and restrictions to restore order.
