Kolkata: A birthday celebration turned into a horrible nightmare for a 20-year-old woman in Kolkata as she was allegedly gangraped by two acquaintances.
The incident took place on Friday night in an apartment in Regent Park, an upscale locality in south Kolkata.
The two accused, who are on the run, have been identified as Chandan Mallick and Dwip Biswas, reportedly a government employee.
According to police, the woman first met Chandan several months ago. Mallick, who presented himself as the head of a south Kolkata Durga Puja committee, later introduced her to Dwip. Both allegedly promised her involvement in the committee, and the three started interacting frequently.
On Friday night, Chandan took her to Dwip’s house on the pretext of celebrating her birthday. They had dinner, but when she wanted to return home, the accused stopped her.
The woman alleged that the duo locked the door, assaulted and raped her.
It was only around 10 next morning that she managed to escape.
After returning home, the survivor informed her family members about the sexual assault, following which an FIR was registered on Saturday.
Police have launched an investigation, and are trying to locate the two men. Pictures of the accused have been released, and anyone with information on the duo have been urged to inform police.
