Kolkata: It is not just former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital—Sandip Ghosh—and the accused in the rape and murder of trainee doctor, Sanjay Roy, who will undergo polygraph test by the CBI. The central probe agency will also conduct polygraph tests on two trainee doctors, whose fingerprints were found in the seminar room—the crime scene, reported the India Today. A staffer and an intern would also undergo the test, India Today report stated.

Earlier, the CBI had presented Ghosh and four other doctors, who were on duty on August 9 (the night of the incident), to a special court to seek permission for the lie detection tests on Thursday, reported the News 18.

Such tests require both court approval and the suspect’s consent. According to reports, the Special Court granted the CBI’s request.

Why lie-detector tests for trainee docs, staffer?

The two trainee doctors, who would reportedly undergo the test, were on duty with the victim—a 31-year-old trainee doctor— the night of the incident. They had dinner together before retiring to the seminar room, reported the India Today.

The house staff member, who will also take the test, was reportedly seen on CCTV footage going to the third floor from the first floor emergency ward, the report claimed. Another intern, who was on the same floor and interacted with the victim before she went to rest, would also undergo the lie-detector test.

The medical reports, including DNA evidence from the victim’s body, do not conclusively link these four individuals to the crime. But, the CBI wants to find out if they played any role in tampering evidence or were part of any conspiracy, sources told the India Today.

What was the sequence of events on August 9?

According to the statements of the victim’s colleagues, who were with her on duty that night, the following is the sequence of events, reported the India Today.

The sequence of events on the fateful night, according to statements from the four individuals, is as follows:

  • The two first-year trainee doctors had dinner with the victim around midnight. They watched the Olympics Javelin final in the seminar room together.
  • The three decided to rest in the seminar room.
  • The sleep room was being used for a polysomnography test.
  • The first-year doctors went to the sleep room after the test ended around 1:30-2:00 am.
  • The victim remained in the seminar room.
  • The house staff member was on duty in the emergency on the first floor.
  • The house staff member went to the third floor around 2:45 am and returned between 3:30 and 3:45 am
  • The intern was in a separate room on the third floor.
  • None of the four heard anything from the seminar room, they claimed in their statements to the probe agency.
  • The victim’s body was discovered by the first year doctor the following morning. He alerted the hospital authorities.
