New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to allow a petition filed by former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh.

In his plea, Ghosh had challenged a Calcutta High Court decision that ordered a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into his alleged financial irregularities during his tenure at the hospital.

But, a bench of the apex court, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, stated that Ghosh had no locus to implead in the plea, which is a PIL.

The allegation of financial irregularities surfaced after a 31-year trainee doctor was allegedly rape and murdered in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9. The incident has triggered massive protests.

A former deputy superintendent of the facility, Akhtar Ali, had raised a slew of allegations against Ghosh and requested a probe by the Enforcement Directorate.

Ali had alleged that Ghosh sold bio-medical waste, such as gloves and syringes, to his Bangladeshi contacts, violating rules which stipulate that such waste can only be handed out to authorized centers for proper disposal and recycling.

Ali had claimed that no action was taken against Ghosh even after repeated complaints made before the vigilance department, among others.
