Kolkata: A woman from Garia in Kolkata has been diagnosed with Human Coronavirus HKU1 (HCov-HKU1). The 45-year-old woman is now admitted to a private hospital where her condition is stable. Experts have said there is no need for panic, but people should be aware of the symptoms and remain cautious.

The woman was suffering from a severe cough, fever and cold for the last two weeks, before she got admitted to the hospital.

HCov-HKU1, also known as Betacoronavirus Hongkonense, affects the upper respiratory system. The name comes from Hong Kong, as the virus was first detected there in 2004. It has been considered a global health concern since then.

According to experts, the common symptoms include a runny nose, fever, cough, sore throat, headache and wheezing. If left untreated, patients may develop serious ailments, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

While this virus can affect anyone, those at greater risk are people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly, infants, and those suffering from respiratory disorders, diabetes or heart problems. HCov-HKU1 is highly contagious and spreads through airborne droplets. It may also spread through close personal contacts such as handshakes and touching contaminated objects.

“There is no reason for panic. This virus has been around for nearly 20 years now. However, some precautions need to be taken. Basic hygiene needs to be maintained and hands should be washed regularly with soap for 20 seconds. People may also use masks when visiting high-risk zones,” a doctor said.

People should also avoid direct contact with people displaying symptoms of the infection. As the weather changes and temperatures rise, there is a need to remain hydrated at all times.
