New Delhi: As India grapples with the rising rate of diabetes and obesity, the country’s premier food auditor has proposed labelling of packaged food with disclaimers marked in bold red.
The red colour-coding will be prominently displayed on the front of packaged food that have high-fat, high-sugar and high-salt content levels, the Food Safety And Standards Authority of India said in a statement.
Packaged food labelling is one of the key highlights of the FSSAI’s new labelling and display regulations, which is ready for draft notification.
“The idea behind the new labelling regulations is to enable citizens to know more about the composition of food products, so that they can make informed choices,” the statement added.
Other takeaways from the draft notification:
Mandatory labelling, such as allergens (substance that causes an allergic reaction) and logo of veg, non-veg food for the prepared food.
Every package of food material, which is not meant for human consumption shall bear a [X] symbol so as to clearly distinguish between non-food grade items and food items.
