Paradip: Coins worth over Rs 14 lakh have allegedly gone missing from the Union Bank of India (UBI) branch, Paradip, in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district.
The bank officials lodged a complaint with the local police after the internal audit of the nationalised bank on Tuesday found that the coins worth Rs 14,86,780 (around 3 lakhs in terms of number) went missing from the bank between 2016 and 2020.
Santosh Kumar, who joined as branch manager on January 25, found the discrepancy in the number of coins of Rs 1, Rs 2 and Rs 5 denominations deposited between 2016 and 2020. After the internal audit team corroborated his missing coins claim, he lodged a complaint at Paradip Lock police station against four staff, two among whom served as managers of the branch.
Acting on the complaint, police have registered a case under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant, banker) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.
