Colombo: Leading Sri Lanka cricketer Kusal Mendis was arrested on Sunday for running over a 64-year-old cyclist, who later succumbed to his injuries.
The accident took place on Sunday morning in the Colombo suburb of Panadura. The senior citizen, a local resident, was rushed to a hospital immediately after being hit by the vehicle. But his injuries were so severe that he didn’t survive long.
Horethuduwa police station has started an investigation and trying to find out whether the wicketkeeper-batsman was driving under the influence of alcohol.
He will be produced before a magistrate most probably on Monday.
The 25-year-old Mendis has played 44 Tests and 76 ODIs for Sri Lanka so far. He is part of the national squad which resumed training after the COVID-19 lockdown. The residential training camp, which was held at Pallekele, ended on Wednesday.
