Kraków / Zakopane: A video showing a Lithuanian couple climbing Mount Rysy in Poland with their nine-month-old baby has gone viral, sparking outrage and concern over the safety of the young child.

According to the report from India Today, the couple ignored repeated warnings from guides and rescuers about the treacherous and icy conditions on the mountain. They set out with no proper safety equipment.

As conditions worsened, the father realised he was unable to continue safely and attempted to borrow crampons from a mountain guide. The guide then stepped in and carried the baby to safety. The family ultimately ended the attempt and came down without reported serious injury.

“No words.” A couple climbed Poland’s highest mountain with a baby — and sparked outrage

Social media users responded with strong criticism. One user wrote: “It’s hard to understand why some parents would take such a risky decision with their child’s safety at stake. There are countless ways to enjoy nature without putting a baby in harm’s way.”

Another said: “Bringing a nine-month-old up a dangerous mountain without gear is beyond reckless – lucky the guide saved the baby.”

The incident raises questions about the responsibilities of parents in adventure contexts, and about the guidance and oversight provided by mountain guides and rescue services in high-risk terrain.

Mount Rysy is the highest peak in Poland (2,499 m) and part of the High Tatras range on the Poland-Slovakia border. While popular with hikers, the summit route can be technically demanding and becomes especially hazardous in frozen or icy conditions. Guides often issue warnings when conditions deteriorate.
