Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on Friday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The system over northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal moved west-north-west-wards, concentrated into a depression and lay cantered at 5.30 pm over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off South Odisha- North Andhra Pradesh coasts.
The depression lay around 60 km south-southeast of Puri, 130 km east of Gopalpur, 130 km south-southwest of Paradip in Odisha and 230 km east-northeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
It is very likely to continue to move nearly westwards and cross South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puri and Kalingapatnam close to Gopalpur around morning of Saturday.
Under its influence, Odisha is likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall.
A red warning of very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy spells accompanied by thunderstorm/ lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph has been issued by the IMC for the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, and Kalahandi.
Isolated heavy to very heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapada districts.
There is also a warning of isolated heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph for one or two places in Boudh, Sonepur, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore. Isolated heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
