Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low pressure area over the north coastal Tamil Nadu is unlikely to strengthen further, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Wednesday evening.

“The system over southwest Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu coast moved nearly northwestwards across north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & south Andhra Pradesh coasts and was over the north coastal Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood at 5.30 pm on October 22,” it said.

The Met office further stated that it is likely to move west-northwestwards across north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh and weaken into a low-pressure area during the next 24 hours.

Head (Additional in-charge), RMC-Chennai, B Amudha attributed the weakening of a weather system to several interconnected and dynamic factors. “One of the cloud masses in the southern hemisphere that had influenced the weather systems in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea moved away, causing the cloud banding to diffuse. Moreover, the system travelled close to the coast rather than over the open seas, and its interaction with land areas limited the time available for further intensification,” she added.

Meanwhile, Odisha may experience light to moderate rainfall and thundershower activity till October 26 with the system affecting the wind direction and bringing in more moisture from the sea, coupled with local convective activity and a cyclonic circulation in Andaman sea.

Yellow warning of thunderstorm/ lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph has been issued for districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur on October 22-23.

The Met office has also forecast dense fog conditions in Odisha on October 22-23.

Thunderstorm along with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may continue in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts on October 24.

Similar weather conditions may prevail in the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj,Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri on October 25-26.

Fishermen have been asked to watch out for rough seas and gusty winds. People have been advised to move to safer places during lightning and thundershower activities.

Though there is no weather warning thereafter, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms may occur at a few places across the state during the subsequent 5 days, it added.
