Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area has formed over central parts of South Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.
“Under the influence of yesterday’s upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal & neighbourhood, a low-pressure area formed over central parts of South Bay of Bengal (BoB) at 0300 UTC of today.”
It further stated that the system is likely to move northwestwards over southwest Bay of Bengal till April 8 and thereafter, northwards over westcentral BoB during the subsequent 48 hours.
According to the IMD, most numerical models (ECMWF, NCEP GFS, IMD GFS) are indicating feeble low pressure area over central parts of South Bay of Bengal. “Models are indicating northwestwards movement of the system during the next 2-3 days followed by northwards movement over westcentral Bay of Bengal thereafter during the subsequent 2 days. Models are not indicating any further intensification of the system which is also supported by unfavourable wind shear over central Bay of Bengal,” it added.
The weather agency has forecast fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next 6-7 days. Squally weather with wind speed 35-45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph likely to prevail over Andaman Sea and over southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining central Bay of Bengal from April 7-9.
