Low Pressure In Next 48 Hours, Condition Favourable For Advance Of Monsoon: IMD

Bhubaneswar: With a low-pressure area most likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining the Andaman Sea in the next 48 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the condition is favourable for the advance of southwest monsoon.

“A cyclonic circulation persists over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining Sumatra coast. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is very likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining the Andaman Sea around May 13. It is likely to become more marked over the central parts of south Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 72 hours. The condition is now favourable for the advance of the southwest monsoon into some parts of southeast Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea and Nicobar Islands around May 16,” IMD said in a mid-day bulletin.

On the rainfall forecast for Odisha, the bulletin said that under the influence of a trough stretching from east Vidarbha to Rayalseema across south Tamil Nadu and Telangana, there will be thunderstorm, lightning and strong wind over some parts of the coastal and interior districts in the next 24 hours. The condition will prevail till May 15.

In view of the rainfall activity, IMD has issued yellow warning for the following districts till May 5.

May 11
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places over the districts of Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur and  Boudh.

May 12
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Deogarh and Angul.

May 13
Thunderstorm with lightning at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj,  Balasore, Angul, Malkangiri, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal and Nayagarh.

May 14
Thunderstorm with lightning at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj and Balasore.

May 15
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places over the districts of coastal Odisha, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

Meanwhile, an evening release by the Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar said that the day temperature rose to 40 degree Celsius and above in five places in the interior districts with Talcher and Titlagarh recording 41 degrees each followed by Bhawanipatna (40.5), Malkangiri (40.5) and Paralakhemundi (40).
