Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Thursday, raising the likelihood of heavy to extremely heavy rain in Odisha over the next five days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.

The upper air cyclonic circulation over north Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coast persists and now extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over North Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood on September 10, it said.

The weather agency has forecast heavy rain and thunderstorm activity across Odisha till the morning of September 14. Red, orange and yellow warnings have been issued for different districts during the period.

For the next 24 hours, an orange warning of heavy to very heav rain has been issued for Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind reaching 40-50 kmph may occur at some places over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Puri and Khordha districts during the period.

Yellow warning of heavy rainfall was sounded for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kataka, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Puri and Khordha, while thunderstorm with gusty wind of 30-40 kmph is likely over Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Gajapati, Ganjam and Nayagada.

On September 10-11, a red warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj where heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places is very likely.

Orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Baleshwar, Bhadrak and Kendujhar. Thunderstorm with 40-50 kmph wind is likely over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj.

Besides, yellow warning of heavy rain has been issued for Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri and Khordha.
Thunderstorm with 30-40 kmph wind is also very likely over Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Baragada, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.

On September 11-12, orange warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorm with 40-50 kmph wind has been issued for Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.

Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamala, Nabarangpur, Gajapati and Ganjam, while thunderstorm with 30-40 kmph wind is likely over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamala, Nawarangpur, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.

On September 12-13, yellow warning of heavy rainfall has been issued for Kandhamala, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri. Thunderstorm with 30-40 kmph wind is very likely over Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Nawarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.

On September 13-14, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind reaching 30-40 kmph is very likely at one or two places over Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.

The IMD said squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off the Odisha coast from September 9 to 11.

Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough along and off the Odisha coast during the same period. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Odisha coast in the said period.
