Hyderabad: A person from Odisha was arrested at Secunderabad railway station while allegedly smuggling 12.318 lakh of ganja worth Rs 6.16 lakh to Maharashtra in trains.
The accused has been identified as Sameera Bishoyi (31), a labourer from Dengapadar village in Ganjam district. He was nabbed while boarding Dadar-bound Devagiri Express with ganja-laden suitcase during a joint operation by RPF, GRP and Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) on Thursday. His accomplice, Munna Nayak (29) of Mohana in Gajapati district, managed to escape.
Police kept a watch on a trolley suitcase left unattended on Platform 6. Bishoyi was arrested when he returned to retrieve the bag later in the afternoon, The Hindu reported.
The report further stated that Nayak had lured Bishoyi in ganja smuggling, offering Rs 10,000 per trip, after the latter returned to his village about 6 months ago. He had earlier worked as a sales boy in Thane, Maharashtra.
On April 16, the duo boarded Konark Express from Berhampur and reached Secunderabad the following day. They chose to travel via Telangana to avoid heightened checks in Maharashtra, but temporarily abandoned the suitcase at Secunderabad station due to police presence.
The duo had already made prior deliveries to locations including Dadar, Thane and Kalyan, the report added.
