Guwahati: Authorities on Tuesday apprehended a man at the site of the new Assam government’s swearing-in ceremony, where a handful of live bullets were discovered on him, according to police officials.
The suspect was swiftly detained for interrogation and escorted to the Basistha police station, a senior officer, PTI reported. “He was taken into custody for questioning. He is being taken to Basistha police station,” the officer stated.
Notably, no weapons were found in the man’s possession, the officer added. “An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the recovery and whether any security threat was involved,” he said.
The dramatic arrest unfolded just moments before Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya was due to administer the oaths of office and secrecy to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, marking his second consecutive term, along with the incoming Council of Ministers.
Gathering of National Leaders
The ceremony is drawing an elite assembly of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) heavyweights, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Over 40 chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are also in attendance.
Adding to the prestige, several foreign diplomats and prominent industrialists have been invited, with an estimated crowd of around 1 lakh people expected to witness the proceedings at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara. This follows the BJP-led NDA’s decisive mandate in the recent Assam Assembly polls, amplifying the event’s national significance.
