Bhubaneswar: A 40-year-old salon owner allegedly attempted to end his life on Wednesday by stabbed himself multiple times at Nayapalli in Odisha capital after being blackmailed by a girl over WhatsApp video call.
The victim, who hails from Dhenkanal, is battling for life at a private hospital here.
According to sources, an unknown girl befriended him on Facebook three days ago and chatted with him. She later made a video call and convinced him to take off his clothes while recording the entire conversation. She then abruptly cut the call and began blackmailing him with the nude video and asked him to cough up a heft amount.
The victim approached the Cyber police station and lodged a complaint against the unknown caller. It is being suspected that attempted to kill self fearing humiliation and over alleged police inaction. He was found lying unconscious inside his shop this morning and was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent a surgery, the sources added.
Police sources, however, said that neither the cyber crime police station nor Nayapalli police have received any complaint from the victim.
Meanwhile, Nayapalli police have begun a suo motu inquiry and are trying to ascertain the circumstances and reasons leading to the incident. His mobile phone is being verified of the allegations of sextortion.
