Berhampur: Police on Wednesday recreated the crime scene in connection with the murder of a woman, who was allegedly stabbed nearly 16 times at a lodge near the new bus stand in Baidyanathpur area of Odisha’s Berhampur last evening.
The deceased has been identified as Priya Moharana of Lanjipali area in Berhampur. The accused, Abhaya Moharana (34) of the same area, surrendered before police after committing the crime.
According to sources, Abhaya had recently lost his job as a lab assistant at a private hospital and suspected that his 24-year-old girlfriend was planning to marry someone else. He lured her to the lodge, which they had visited in the past too. They checked into the room at around 11.45 am on Tuesday. An argument ensued between them, following which, Abhaya attacked her with a knife in a fit of rage, killing her on the spot.
In the evening, the accused came out of the lodge and reached Gosaninuagaon police station, where he confessed to have murdered Priya.
Speaking to the media, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M said that the accused carried the knife with him to the lodge. “Preliminary investigation suggests that the murder was premeditated, fuelled by jealousy and suspicion,” he added.
