Country’s biggest manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, on Thursday announced that it is going to stop making diesel engines from April 1, 2020.
The decision to stop diesel cars is due to the new BS 6 emission norms that will be introduced then. This would increase the cost of upgrading diesel engines to such an extent that it will become unviable to sell them.
The company stated that it will shift focus to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and hybrid tech.
Diesel cars currently constitute 30 per cent of Maruti’s sales.
Maruti’s decision to phase out diesel cars is expected to be replicated by other car manufacturers as well.
