Mercury May Soar To 44°C In Interior Odisha; Nor’wester Warning Continues Till May 26

Bhubaneswar: Interior Odisha is likely to experience hot weather conditions with mercury soaring to 44 degree Celsius during the next 5 days due to lack of significant thunderstorm activity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Monday.

“The day temperature is likely to be 42 degree Celsius or more at few places in interior Odisha – Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Jharsuguda and Bargarh- during the next 5 days. Consequently hot and discomfort weather is very likely to prevail. People are advised to take precautionary measures while going outside during day time between 11 am and 3 pm,” it said.

On Sunday, 14 places in the state recorded 40 degree Celsius or more with Sambalpur being the hottest at 43.3 degree Celsius followed by Hirakud (42.8) and Boudh (42.6). Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 39.5 degree Celsius and 37.5 degree Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, nor’wester or thunderstorm activity may continue in some parts of Odisha till May 26. Thunderstorm with lightning , hail and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is likely at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangapur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Balangir and Nuapada till 8.30 am on Tuesday. Thunderstorm with lightning may also occur at one or two places in Gajapati, Ganjam, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak. There is also a forecast for light to moderate rain at a few places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangapur, Rayagada, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and at one or two places in the rest districts of Odisha during this period.
