Mercury Soars Past 40°C At 10 Places In Odisha Amid Severe Heatwave Warning

Bhubaneswar: Amid the severe heatwave warning, mercury soared past 40°C at 10 places in Odisha on Friday.

Four places recorded 41°C and above.

Jharsuguda sizzled at 41.8°C, followed by Angul (41.1°C), Balangir and Titlagarh at 41°C each, Sonepur, Boudh and Bhawanipatna at 40.5°C each, Sambalpur (40.3), Hirakud and Sundargarh at 40.1°C and Bhadrak at 40°C.

The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 37.2°C and 38.2°C respectively.

By 2.30 pm, the day temperature had touched 40.1°C in Jharsuguda and 40°C in Sambalpur. Rourkela recorded 39.4°C, Hirakud 39°C, Keonjhar 37.6°C and Bhubaneswar 37°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange warning of heatwave to severe heatwave for one or two places in Jharsuguda, Sambalpur and Mayurbhanj districts during the day. It had also warned of heatwave conditions along with warm nights at one or two places in Sundargarh, Boudh and Balangir.

It had also forecast heatwave conditions at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Kalahandi and Gajapati along with hot and humid conditions at one or two places in Khurda, Puri and Jajpur districts on Friday.

Severe heatwave, heatwave, hot and humid and warm night are likely to prevail in Odisha from March 14-18.
