Bhubaneswar: With the return of scorching heat and humid conditions, the day temperature started rising in many parts of the state on Saturday.
As per the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur turned out to be the hottest place in the state on Saturday recording 42.7 degree Celsius.
Sambalpur was closely followed by Hirakud which recorded 41.7°C, while the day temperature in Jharsuguda touched 41.6°C.
State capital Bhubaneswar recorded 40.2 °C, while the mercury in Balasore stood at 39.7 °C, in Rourkela 39.6 °C and Chandbali 39.4 °C.
Notably, the temperature crossed 40 degree Celsius for the first time this summer. Last year, the mercury had breached 40 degree Celsius on April 5.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that Odisha is likely to experience heatwave and hot and humid conditions till May 14.
Hot and humid conditions may prevail at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack and Jajpur districts on May 10.
Similar warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack and Jajpur from May 11-14.
Heatwave is likely to return to the state from May 11. Yellow warning has been issued for Jharsuguda, Boudh, Balangir, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur for Sunday.
