Bhubaneswar: More than 15 lakh birds of over 200 species were sighted during the mid-winter census carried out in different wetlands across Odisha.
The Odisha State Wildlife Organisation, in a release on Sunday, said the census was carried out with precision, dividing each wetland into strategic sectors to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Over 200 dedicated participants, including forest staff, ornithologists, researchers, and trained volunteers, meticulously surveyed the wetlands using spotting scopes, binoculars, and data sheets to ensure the accurate identification and counting of birds.
As per the census, 11,27,228 birds of 196 species were sighted in Chilika lake and Mangalajodi wetlands, marking an increase of nine species compared to the previous year. The birds included 10,87,226 migratory birds of 109 species while the resident birds totalled 40,002 of 87 species. In Nalabana Sanctuary, 3,43,226 birds of 92 species were recorded.
Hirakud reservoir in Sambalpur recorded 3,77,732 birds of 122 species. The reservoir was divided into 21 sectors, with 32 teams and 70 participants carrying out the survey.
Similarly, total 1,51,614 birds of 118 species were counted in Bhitarkanika National Park. The Lesser Whistling Duck (44,825) and Northern Pintail (18,776) were the most populous species observed in the national park, the census report stated.
