Mumbai: Actor Aamir Khan, during a recent conversation with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Lokmat Maharashtrian Of The Year 2026 event, called for social media ban for teenagers as he believes it is corrupting young minds.
Speaking at the event held at Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India, Aamir reflected on how social media changed his habits over the years. “I have this point of view and I may or may not be right. But I feel that social media has had a deep impact on all of us. It has a lot of advantages. But there was a time when I used to read 2-3 books in just one week,” Aamir said.
“I would read while I was on my way or even while having breakfast. Despite my hectic schedule, I used to read books. Now, I am wasting time on YouTube or watching Instagram Reels! I also know that this is not good for me,” he added.
“It’s like being hypnotised,” the actor remarked while explaining how algorithm of social media keeps viewers hooked.
Expressing concern over the impact of social media on younger users, Aamir said: “Hamari toh umar ho gayi hai, but the youngsters can get impacted deeply. I am not against it but we need to think about it. There are many countries that are implementing the rule that children under 16 can’t use social media. I wonder how it’ll be implemented but the thought process is correct as their minds are getting corrupted. Unke brains ki re-wiring ho rahi hai.”
On the work front, Aamir was last seen in ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, which also features Genelia Deshmukh and 10 neurodivergent actors — Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, Vedant Sharma, Naman Misra, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Ashish Pendse, Samvit Desai, Simran Mangeshkar and Aayush Bhansali.
