Cuttack: A minor girl was critically injured after a temporary bridge collapsed during box drain construction work in Odisha’s Cuttack on Tuesday.
The incident comes a day after a man died and his wife sustained critical injuries in a similar incident after their car plunged into Taladanda canal in Cuttack due to absence of barricades on Monday.
The fresh incident took place in Kesarpur area of the city after a temporary iron bridge at the box drain construction site collapsed when the 16-year-old girl was passing over it. As a result, the girl got trapped on the collapsed portion of the bridge and sustained critical injuries, sources said.
The construction work for the box drain project has been going on for a very long time in Cuttack and the temporary bridge was built over the open drains for the use of the locals.
The girl was crossing the drain when a portion of the bridge caved in, apparently due to poor quality construction. The girl, who got trapped, was rescued by locals and rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Locals expressed disappointment over the mishap and demanded adequate safety measures during construction of the box drains.
