Dubai: Ancient Greeks like the Athenians had no word for “sin.” They used hamartia for mistakes and hubris for arrogant pride against gods or others — which was a crime. These ideas explain the US-Iran standoff: bad judgments make war restarting way too likely.

Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, shows this pattern clearly. His recent statement hints he’ll be tougher than his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The father died on day one of the US-Israeli attack to end Iran’s Islamic Republic, Bloomberg reported.

Mojtaba hasn’t appeared publicly — believed to be hiding while recuperating from injury — but still calls the shots. On April 30, he said: “there would be no concessions on Iran’s nuclear or missile programmes, no return to free international sea passage through the Strait of Hormuz oil route, and no acceptance of a continued US presence in the Middle East.”

These demands suggest unbeatable power, but Iran doesn’t hold the top cards in this deadly game. President Donald Trump makes the same mistake with his rigid terms. Both ignore the enemy’s strengths and their own weak spots.

Trump challenged the blockade by sending navy ships through Hormuz. Iran hit back with missiles and drones on UAE oil sites and cargo ships. The US sank six Iranian boats and denied Tehran’s claim of damaging a US vessel. Getting two stuck ships free cost too much — it shows the strait can reopen, but at huge risk. That’s why the April 8 ceasefire lasts: all-out war won’t bring easy wins.

Mojtaba linked his speech to 1622, when Anglo-Persians took Hormuz Island from Portugal for Gulf trade control. He wraps his shaky rule in Persian nationalism to gain support.

Regime’s Fragile Hold

War might help short-term, but fixing the economy and reforms his father failed at needs big changes — almost a new regime. The rial, which crashed and sparked January protests, is falling again. The IRGC survives but is hurt: top leaders dead, air defenses gone. Iran scares off Trump’s energy attacks by threatening Gulf states, but can’t take the hit long-term—yet keeps pushing.

In Tehran, leaders like President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf seek talks, splitting regime views. No coup without army revolt.

The White House messes up too. Ghalibaf, former IRGC boss, mocked Trump’s X claims — war “won,” military ruined, economy imploded, nukes erased, oil sites primed to “explode” — with math showing Iran’s unused tools (Red Sea blocks, pipeline strikes around Hormuz) beat US used-up ones.

Hormuz Standoff Tests Limits

Blocked Hormuz under ceasefire tests who endures pain longer. No one can wait forever, so Trump tests—and Iran responds. Hubris blocks clear thinking, fuels win fantasies, and skips deals.

Past mistakes pile up from nuclear games, old-school rule, Trump’s Venezuela copy. Overconfidence in White House and Khamenei’s bunker makes war restart one mistake away.
