Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday stated that southwest monsoon has advanced further and covered the entire Odisha.
“Southwest Monsoon has further advanced and today it covered remaining parts of Odisha,” the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar said.
The southwest monsoon had made an onset over some parts of Odisha on May 28, 13 days earlier than the usual arrival date of June 10. However, after covering some districts of the state, the monsoon remained subdued for several days. As a result, the intensity and area coverage of monsoon rain remained by and large limited.
With the monsoon regaining momentum and covering the entire state, many parts of Odisha are likely to experience heavy rain in the coming days, the weather agency said.
It said monsoon seasonal cumulative rainfall realised during June 1 to June 17 was 73.0 mm against its normal value of 91.4 mm. During the period 1 district recorded – Large Excess, 5 districts-Excess, 12 districts-Normal, 11 districts-Deficient & rest 1 district is in Large Deficient category.
Meanwhile, a low pressure area has formed over Southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal.
Under the influence of the system, many parts of Odisha are likely to experience widespread rainfall over the next three days. The southwest monsoon is also expected to gain momentum again, with favourable conditions for its further advancement into more parts of Odisha and adjoining areas of Chhattisgarh.
The weather agency has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in various parts of the state. Districts like Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rain on Tuesday. Wind speeds may also range between 30 to 40 kmph in some areas.
The intensity and spread of rainfall across Odisha may increase, especially as the monsoon current gains steam.
