New Delhi: Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, prime accused in the Sagar Dhankar murder case, was granted bail by Delhi High Court on Tuesday.
Sushil, who bagged a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and silver in 2012 London Games, was released after providing a Rs 50,000 bond and two sureties of the same amount.
Sushil was charged with murder, along with rioting, unlawful assembly and criminal conspiracy after 23-year-old junior wrestler Dhankar succumbed to injuries following an attack by Sushil and associates in the parking lot of Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium on May 4, 2021.
On the run for more than two weeks, Sushil was arrested from Mundka in western Delhi. He has been in judicial custody since June 2, 2021.
Sushil was granted interim bail earlier — four days on humanitarian grounds to perform his father’s last rites in March 2023 and from July 23-30, 2023, when he underwent a knee surgery. Thereafter, Sushil surrendered in Tihar Jail again in August 2023.
Delhi Police had named Sushil the main accused in a 170-page chargesheet, citing tensions over Dhankar’s reluctance to vacate the flat and rumours that the former feared him.
