Bhubaneswar: A day after a 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing a four-year-old girl in Airfield police area in Bhubaneswar, Twin City Commissioner of Police (CP) Soumendra Priyadarshi on Wednesday ruled out sexual assault on the child, citing preliminary medical examination report.
He identified the accused as Ghania Das, a daily wage earner and neighbour of the victim in Kela Sahi slum.
“Preliminary probe has revealed that he had taken the minor girl to his house with the intention to rape her but fled amid commotion as people went out looking for her. Locals saw her running out of the house, they chased him but he managed to escape. We suspect he slit her throat due to fear of getting caught. While doctors have ruled out sexual assault on the child, the postmortem report can shed further light on it,” he said.
The CP further said that six police teams were formed to nab the accused. “He had fled to Balikuda, his in-laws’ place, and then to Burikina and was finally apprehended at Rahama station area late last night. The murder weapon with blood stains has been seized. Since this is a sensitive case, chargesheet will be filed on a priority basis and efforts will be made to ensure exemplary punishment for the accused to contain such cases in future,” he said.
His blood samples have been collected to ascertain where he was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident, he added.
A case under Sections 363 (kidnapping) and 302 (murder) of the IPC has been registered against Das at Airfield police station.
According to police sources, Das, who frequently visited the victim’s house, called the girl to his home on Monday evening to give a chocolate. Her parents were aware about it. When she did not return till 9 pm, her parents knocked on his door but he ran out of the house through the backyard.
