Bhubaneswar: Contrary to the perception of a ‘prim and proper’ profession, teachers in Odisha are making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately. They are being increasingly embroiled in crimes, both as victims and perpetrators.
While several teachers are victims of murderous assaults, others have been accused of sexual misconduct with their students.
In the latest incident, the Principal of Stewart School, Sukinda, Chandan Kumar Das, was reportedly battling for life in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after being attacked on Monday.
Sources told Odisha Bytes that Das is believed to have been attacked inside his quarters by the son of an employee whom he had sacked recently. There was more than one attacker, the source said, adding that the teacher sustained multiple injuries.
Husband With Knife
A man attacked his wife, a teacher, inside Durgapalli High School in Puintala block of Balangir district on Wednesday.
According to sources, the incident took place around 11 am when Pradip Panda suddenly barged into the school premises and attacked his wife, Sanjurani Deb, with a knife. He was, however, overpowered by other teachers.
A Bhubaneswar-based teacher allegedly lost Rs 60,000 in four instalments to a cyber fraudster while updating the KYC of her BSNL mobile connection in July. The victim, Priyadarshini Joshi, has registered a complaint regarding this in the cyber cell of the Commissionrate Police.
Police are hunting for the teacher of a coaching centre in Koraput district for allegedly beating his students. The incident came to light after some students of Fusion Classes, a coaching centre at Chhapara, lodged a police complaint.
People earning appointment as teachers by submitting false certificates is also a menace in Odisha. To tackle the problem, the state government last month directed the Block Education Officers (BEOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs) to examine the credentials of all schoolteachers and lodged complaints against the bogus ones.
Seeking Sexual Favours
A senior lecturer in political science at a Jajpur college was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing two students. The students told police that the accused used to seek sexual favours from students on the pretext of helping them with their projects. He would threaten to cut their marks for refusing his proposal.
Police arrested a primary schoolteacher in Ramachandrapur area in Keonjhar district for allegedly molesting a female colleague. According to the police complaint lodged by the victim, the accused had tried to outrage her modesty and take photos with his mobile phone. She, however, managed to escape. She later snatched his mobile phone and beat him with her slippers.
Police have arrested a teacher of Balasore Art and Crafts College for allegedly circulating an objectionable photo of a girl student on social media. The student complained to police that the accused teacher had posted her private photo with him on social media.
