Berhampur: The Ganjam administration has rescued a week-old baby boy found abandoned at Dura near Odisha’s Berhampur.
According to sources, two individuals heard faint cries from the bushes and found an infant inside a bag. They then handed the newborn to someone for a medical check-up. However, when they came to know he could not conduct his medical check-up, they informed the Childline and District Child Protection Officer (DCPO).
A team reached the spot and rescued the baby, who reportedly suffered from multiple ant bites. “Our team, along with the police, went to the person’s home and rescued the baby,” said district child protection officer Rajashree Dash.
The baby, weighing about 2.1 kg, has been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where doctors confirmed that the umbilical cord was still attached, suggesting the newborn was abandoned soon after birth. His condition is stated to be stable.
Meanwhile, a probe is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the baby being dumped. Efforts are also being made to locate the mother.
